Walk to the Box event on Tuesday
In an effort to promote the importance of Native Hawaiian civic engagement and turnout at the polls, a collaboration of community organizations are again organizing several get-out-the-vote (GOTV) events across the state including on Maui.
The Valley Isle’s “Walk to the Box” event will be on Tuesday.
Participants will drop their ballots off at 9 a.m. at the Velma McWayne Santos Community Center in Wailuku with sign waving at 10 a.m. In front of the Queen Ka’ahumanu Center near the old Sears.
The events aim to encourage the broader Native Hawaiian community to vote in the upcoming 2022 general election and also to highlight the importance of participating in Hawaii’s electoral processes, according to a news release.
“There is a long-standing misinformed belief that Native Hawaiians neither care nor show up to the polls to vote, as compared to other ethnic groups in Hawaii,” said Hailama Farden, president of the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs, one of the organizations involved. “This is a tiresome and harmful stereotype. We are once again organizing to send a clear message that our lahui is rising, and we will show up to the polls and amplify our voices this election.”
