Fishers, divers, surfers, cultural practitioners and others interested in marine resources are invited to attend sessions on the Holomua Marine 30X30 community planning process.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources Division of Aquatic Resources is hosting the sessions for Maui residents to become familiar with the Holomua Initiative, share stories of smaller scale efforts on Maui and provide input for future marine resource management efforts.
The talk story sessions will be held from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the J. Walter Cameron Center Ekolu auditorium at 95 Mahalani St. in Wailuku; from 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Lahaina Intermediate School cafeteria, 871 Lahainaluna Road; and from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Ala Kukui halau building, 4224 Hana Highway in Hana.
According to a news release, residents will be asked to share their knowledge about nearshore waters and "how we can come together to keep families fishing for generations to come."
"The Holomua Marine 30×30 planning process is totally dependent on resource user participation," said Brian Neilson, Division of Aquatic Resources administrator. "We highly encourage Maui residents to come out and attend one of the talk story events this month and share stories about Maui's nearshore resources."
The division will seek input from local marine resources users to help guide the development of Maui's navigation team, a diverse group of local resource users who will design of the island's interconnected networks of marine management areas.
Beginning with Maui, the division will work with communities on each of the main Hawaiian islands through Holomua Marine 30×30 to weave cultural, community and scientific knowledge to create interconnected networks of marine management areas by 2030.
