The state has released $306.8 million for capital improvement projects across the state, including funds to improve bridges on Hana Highway, expand public school facilities and design the south TSA checkpoint at the Kahului Airport, the Governor's Office announced Sunday.
Funds released in November and December for projects in Maui County included:
• $3.6 million (total cost) to design and construct improvements to the seawall and fortify the areas supporting the seawall at King Kamehameha III Elementary School. The estimated completion date is October 2025.
• $3.5 million for the additional design of the south TSA checkpoint at Kahului Airport. The total project cost is $5.5 million and is expected to be completed in July 2023.
• $2.5 million (total cost) to design a new field house at Maui High School with a synthetic turf field, classroom/meeting area, locker rooms and other supporting facilities. The estimated completion date is to be determined.
• $2.5 million to construct a new parking lot and a new loading and unloading zone for students at Wailuku Elementary School. The estimated completion date is August 2024. Another $190,000 was also released for parking lot improvements at the school, with estimated completion in May 2023. The total project cost is $2.95 million.
• $2.4 million (total cost) to design and construct school improvements at Maui Waena Intermediate School, including facility and infrastructure renovations such as spalling repair, interior/exterior repainting, reroofing, replacing damaged ceiling tiles and repairing/replacing cabinets and countertops. The estimated completion date is August 2024.
• $1.25 million (total cost) to build an air conditioning system for Maui Waena Intermediate. The estimated completion date is August 2025.
• $1.15 million (total cost) for playground and shade improvements at Kualapuu Elementary School. The completion date was listed as August 2022.
• $800,000 (total cost) to acquire land to expand the Iao Intermediate School campus to access the county field. There is no estimated completion date.
• $743,000 for roof and gutter replacement for Buildings B and D and installation of bleachers at Kaunakakai Elementary School. The total project cost is $834,425, and the estimated completion date is July 2025.
• $200,000 to design the replacement and rehabilitation of various bridges along Hana Highway. The total project cost is $7.5 million, with estimated completion in October 2023.
• $150,000 to design and construct a girls athletic locker room at Maui High. The total project cost is $8 million and the estimated completion date is December 2024.
• $150,000 to assess the current condition of the Wailuku Public Library to reprogram the existing spaces to improve efficiency and provide more flexibility. The total project cost is $350,000, and the estimated completion date is July 2023.
The funds released also covered statewide efforts, including a $20 million cash infusion into the Dwelling Unit Revolving Fund to finance construction of affordable housing projects statewide, $20 million to finance minor capital improvement projects at University of Hawaii community colleges, $16 million for program support improvements of existing or new school facilities and $1.2 million for multiple transit-oriented development projects in Neighbor Island counties.
