The Maui County Council will choose its leadership, establish committees and appoint staff for the upcoming two-year term at its organizational meeting at 2 p.m. Monday.
The council's chairperson, vice chairperson and presiding officer pro tempore will be chosen at the meeting, which will be open to testifiers and other members of the public in the Council Chamber and online.
Mayor-elect Richard Bissen Jr., whose term also begins Monday, will preside at the meeting until the council adopts a resolution appointing its chairperson.
New staffers are also set to be appointed, as several have agreed to change roles.
"With the new council and the new mayor both taking office, Jan. 2 will be an exciting day in Maui County's history," current Chairperson Alice Lee said in a news release Saturday. "The meeting is a good opportunity for residents to make suggestions on the council's organization."
Prior to the organizational meeting, council members will participate in an inauguration ceremony at 10 a.m. with Kathy Collins as the host and former Judge Rhonda Loo as the keynote speaker.
Both the morning ceremony and the afternoon organizational meeting will take place in the Council Chamber and will be shown live on Akaku's channel 53 and the council's Facebook page.
