Fire weather watch in effect amid high winds, low humidity

The Maui News

Very dry brush, strong trade winds and low relative humidity are putting leeward areas of the state at risk of fire, the National Weather Service warned Thursday.

Leeward portions of all Hawaiian islands are under a fire weather watch from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. today. A fire weather watch means that critical fire weather conditions are forecast to occur.

Any fires that develop under these conditions will likely spread rapidly, the weather service said. Outdoor burning is not recommended.

Humidity is anticipated to be near 45 percent during the afternoon hours, while winds could reach up to 60 mph in some areas.

Portions of Maui, Lanai, Kahoolawe and Hawaii island are under a wind advisory amid predictions of east winds of 25 to 35 mph and localized gusts up to 55 mph. Even stronger east winds of 35 to 45 mph with localized gusts up to 60 mph are expected for the summit of Haleakala, which is also under a wind advisory.

Winds this strong can make driving and walking difficult as well as forcefully open doors and damage hinges or slam doors shut, possibly causing injuries, the weather service said.

Members of the public should watch out for falling tree branches and make sure tents and awnings are secure or taken down. They should also avoid traveling to the summit and be prepared for power outages.

East-facing shores of Molokai and Maui are also under a high surf advisory through 6 p.m. today.

Waves of 7 to 10 feet are expected as a large east swell continues to keep surf elevated before gradually decreasing today, according to the weather service.

Starting at $4.62/week.
