Three musical groups who were instrumental in creating the rock 'n' roll/doo-wop sound will perform on Maui on Jan. 28.

The Drifters, The Platters and Cornell Gunter's Coasters will be in concert at the Maui Arts and Cultural Center's Castle Theater.

Tickets go on sale online only at 10 a.m. today to MACC members and to the general public on Dec. 28.

The Drifters, one of rock 'n' roll's founding vocal groups with a 50-year catalog of hits, created the pre-Motown, heavily choreographed slickness of urban pop-soul, according to a MACC news release. They were the first musical group to sell over 2 million records with their pop classic "Up on the Roof" and became the first African American vocal group to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1988.

The Platters' hit single "Only You" launched the group as superstars on the world stage. Bridging the gap between more traditional vocal group stylings and popular R&B grooves, the Platters' total record sales exceeded $200 million, making them one of the top 25 selling artists of all time. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990 and were the first rock 'n' roll group to have a top 10 album in America.

Cornell Gunter's Coasters were the premier, and perhaps the only, group combining gritty R&B with night club comedy antics. Named after their founding member, the group is known for hits such as "Yakety Yak," "Young Blood" and "Charlie Brown." One of the most popular early R&B/rock 'n' roll acts and consistently entertaining doo-wop/vocal groups, they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1987.

Tickets for the 7:30 p.m. concert are $30, $50, $60, $70 and a limited number of $125 premium seats, plus fees.

All ticket sales are online only at MauiArts.org. For more information, contact the box office from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday at (808) 242-SHOW (7469) or email boxoffice@mauiarts.org.
