High surf expected for north, west shores

1 min read

Waves could reach up to 20 feet along some shores today as a large, long period west-northwest swell peaks and then decreases, according to the National Weather Service.

North- and west-facing shores of Molokai and north-facing shores of Maui are under a high surf advisory from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. today.

Surf was expected to reach 20 to 26 feet on Thursday afternoon and evening before lowering to 15 to 20 feet today.

The swell could bring powerful currents and very strong breaking waves that could make navigating channels dangerous.

The weather service warned the public to stay away from affected coasts, be prepared for road closures and postpone entering or leaving affected channels until the high surf subsides.

Starting at /week.
