Maui County continued its slight uptick in unemployment, reaching 4.3 percent in November, up from 3.9 percent in October and 3.7 percent in September.
Unemployment rates were 6.8 percent on Molokai, 4.3 percent on Maui and 1.2 percent on Lanai, according to data released Thursday by the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.
The county's unemployment rate was second highest in the state in November, just shy of Kauai County at 4.4 percent. However, it's still lower than where Maui County was a year ago at 5.7 percent in November 2021.
Unemployment rates were 4.1 percent in Hawaii County and 3.8 percent in Honolulu County last month.
Statewide, the unemployment rate was 4 percent, while nationally it was 3.4 percent.
The numbers were not seasonally adjusted, meaning they did not take into account seasonal hiring and layoff patterns.
The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.3 percent statewide and 3.7 percent nationwide.
Hawaii continued to see a decline in the total number of people unemployed. Of a total labor force of 674,500 in November, 652,300 were employed and 22,250 were unemployed.
That's compared to the 641,750 people employed and 29,400 people unemployed out of 671,150 in November 2021.
Last month, Hawaii saw the most job gains in the leisure and hospitality industry (up 1,400), education and health services (up 700), other services (up 500), construction (up 400) and information (up 100). Expansion in the hospitality industry was largely in food services and drinking places.
Job losses occurred in professional and business services (down 500); trade, transportation and utilities (down 400); financial activities (down 100); and manufacturing (down 100).
