As the year comes to a close, The Maui News is seeking nominations for the 28th People Who Made a Difference feature, which annually recognizes figures in the community who are making an impact in Maui County.
Nominees must be Maui County residents, groups or organizations, public or private, who have made a positive difference in the Maui County community in 2022. These could include, for example, people who responded to disasters or emergencies, people who set up programs to help underserved groups in the community or people who used innovative solutions to tackle longtime problems.
Last year's winners were Steve Calkins of Hungry Homeless Heroes Hawaii, Claudia Garcia and Kris Musto of Upcountry Strong, Adrienne Laurion of Special Olympics Hawaii, Ekolu Lindsey of Maui Cultural Lands and Hana High School students and sisters Tyra-Li and Pristine Perry of Project Ho'omana.
All found ways to meet the needs of those in their community, whether it was through distributing meals and supplies, putting people back to work in conservation or coordinating virtual fitness classes for athletes stuck at home.
The awards are not meant as lifetime achievement awards, and the nominees must be living.
The staff of The Maui News will vote on the nominees submitted by the public, and the top five awardees will be interviewed and photographed for a special publication appearing in the Dec. 31-Jan. 1 Weekender edition of The Maui News.

Nominations should include:
• The correct spelling of the name or group.
• An explanation of the nomination (no more than 300 words).
• A phone number or email address of the nominee, if possible.
• A phone number of the nominator (for contact purposes only).
The deadline to submit nominations is 5 p.m. on Dec. 9.
