Work to start on new hale at Kepaniwai
A project to build a replacement Hawaiian Hale at Kepaniwai Heritage Gardens in Iao Valley will begin Dec. 12.
It will continue through June, the Maui County Department of Parks and Recreation announced Friday.
The former hale was destroyed in November 2019, apparently by a thief or thieves.
They knocked down the aging structure of ohia wood and palm fronds to steal the copper pipes used for the building’s fire suppression system, members of the Maui Native Hawaiian Club said at the time.
The county project will include the replacement of the structure, the installation of a fire suppression system to include a water storage tank and fire pump, fire suppression waterline, electrical connections and other improvements.
