Sign wavers opposed to the plan by the National Park Service and state Department of Land and Natural Resources to release lab-raised mosquitoes to reduce avian malaria in endangered birds line Kaahumanu Avenue Saturday afternoon. Event organizer and Hawaii Unites founder Tina Lia (right) said she opposed the project for a variety of reasons, including the possibility of the “biopesticide drift” of released mosquitoes moving into inhabited areas. “We’re out here to let people know the serious risk of the project to native birds, the environment and to the public health,” Lia said.
