MEO honors volunteer, benefactor of the year

Maui Economic Opportunity Board Treasurer Cliff Alakai was named volunteer of the year and the Nuestro Futuro Foundation was named benefactor of the year during MEO's 37th volunteer celebration event on Feb. 14.
Alakai is a certified public accountant and the administrator of Maui Medical Group. He has served on the nonprofit's board of directors for 17 years and has served as the board's treasurer for the past six years.
The Nuestro Futuro Foundation, which supports addiction recovery, education, animal welfare and community building, provided MEO with a $100,000 grant. With the funds, MEO Youth Services was able to bring its Maui prevention programs for intermediate and high school youth to Molokai.
The naming of the two honorees highlighted MEO's annual volunteer celebration event, which was attended by nearly 100 volunteers who assisted MEO during the past fiscal year.
"We truly appreciate all of you, our dedicated and compassionate volunteers and donors who have made a decision to give of yourselves in a most precious way, your time and treasury," said MEO CEO Debbie Cabebe. "We appreciate that you have joined us in this journey of 'Helping People. Changing Lives.'"
