A 67-year-old male bicyclist from Kihei was taken to the hospital with critical life-threatening injuries after being struck by a vehicle on Honoapiilani Highway on Saturday afternoon.
At around 1:07 p.m., the bicyclist was traveling westbound on the shoulder in the area of Mile Marker 8.5 in Maalaea when he made a left into the roadway and was hit by a black 2020 Nissan Maxima sedan, which was also traveling westbound, according to the Maui Police Department.
The driver of the Nissan attempted to avoid the collision by swerving left into the oncoming lane of travel and braking but was unable to do so, police said.
The bicyclist sustained critical life-threatening injuries and was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition.
Honoapiilani Highway temporarily closed for nearly four hours until the roadway was cleared.
The 26-year-old male driver of the Nissan and his 25-year-old female passenger, both from London in Ontario, Canada, did not sustain any injuries, police said.
An investigation revealed that the bicyclist was wearing a helmet at the time of the collision, and the two occupants of the Nissan were both reportedly wearing their seatbelts, police said. The airbags did not deploy in the vehicle.
The involvement of speed, drugs and alcohol has yet to be determined as the investigation remains ongoing.
