Hawaii's COVID-19 hospitalizations have been on the rise over the past week, going from 39 to 74 patients from March 26 to Tuesday, an 89.7 percent increase, according to the state Department of Health.
"Our hospitals still have capacity," State Epidemiologist Dr. Sarah Kemble said in a news release Wednesday. "However, it is a reminder of the ongoing circulation of COVID-19 in our community. Staying up to date on COVID-19 vaccines, including boosters, is the best defense against becoming seriously ill from COVID-19."
Maui Memorial Medical Center had only four COVID hospitalizations as of Wednesday morning. All four were fully vaccinated, according to Maui Health.
DOH recommends a bivalent booster for individuals who have not received one yet. Those who have gotten a bivalent booster do not need to get another at this time, but an updated recommendation, especially for those at increased risk of severe infection, is expected soon, DOH said.
Anyone with COVID symptoms should get tested and consult with their health care provider if they are positive, particularly those who are over 50 and/or have an underlying medical condition.
