A free webinar, “Expansion of the U.S. Pacific Remote Islands Marine National Monument: Honoring Cultural and Biological Legacies,” will be held at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

President Joe Biden recently announced that the administration will increase protections for the Pacific Remote Islands by advancing the designation of a new National Marine Sanctuary, a news release said.

This announcement is in response to the long-standing request of the Pacific Remote Islands Coalition (PRI Coalition) to expand protections to the area.

The webinar will be presented by Alan Friedlander who is chief scientist for the National Geographic Society’s Pristine Seas program, and a researcher at the Hawai’i Institute of Marine Biology at the University of Hawaii.
