Farmers and food lovers will be out in full force for the Maui AgFest & 4-H Livestock Fair, which will take place from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. June 3 at the War Memorial Special Events Field.
Presented by the Maui County Farm Bureau, the 14th celebration of the AgFest aims to highlight the important role of agriculture on Maui, according to a news release Saturday.
Returning signature events will include the Maui Legacy Farmers Pancake Breakfast to honor local farmers, the Maui 4-H Livestock Show and Auction to showcase talented young people and the Grand Taste to put Maui chefs to the test.
Farmers Geoff Haines, William "Bill" Eby, David Brown and Carl Bredhoff will be honored at the Pancake Breakfast, which will include sausage, eggs, pancakes, juice, coffee and pineapple from 8 to 10:30 a.m. Tickets cost $12 for adults, $8 for kupuna, $6 for children ages 6 to 12 and are free for children ages 5 and under.
The Grand Taste contest for the Tylun Pang "Fan Favorite" award will be held from 2 to 4:30 p.m., featuring 11 local chefs competing to showcase a Maui-grown ingredient in a main dish or potluck dish. Ticket holders can try all 11 dishes and then vote for their favorite. Awards also include Best Protein, Best Vegetarian and Best Overall. Tickets are $30 in advance and $40 on the day of.
Participating chefs include Chef Marc McDowell, 62 Marcket; Chef Matt Dela Cruz, Humble Market Kitchin; Chef Ryan Luckey, Leilani's on the Beach; Chef Joey Macadangdang, Maca Dang Dang; Chef Kalei Ducheneau, Mala Ocean Tavern; Chef Damian Rubio, Merriman's Kapalua; Chef Jessie Anacleto, Roy's Ka'anapali; Chef Brian Ethredge, Tails Up!; Rhoderick Bulosan, Ka'ana Kitchen; Ryu Ibuos, Umi Seafood & Sushi; and Alvin Savella, Duckine.
This year, a new addition will be Grand Desserts, a contest giving Maui bakers a chance to make one dessert with the contest ingredient of Maui gold pineapple and a second dessert with an ingredient of the bakers' choice.
The AgFest will also feature a Keiki Zone with bouncers, face painting and games; an Ag Education tent with agricultural experts presenting workshops and demonstrations; the Grown on Maui Farmers' Market with fresh produce and local goodies; and a Food Zone with food booths and trucks.
Local talent will headline the entertainment, and AgFest merchandise will also be available for purchase.
Admission tickets are cash only at the door and cost $5 for adults. Entry is free for those 18 years and under with a student ID. Parking is also free.
