A small brush fire in a homeless camp in Olowalu forced a temporary closure of Honoapiilani Highway on Monday evening, according to the Maui Fire Department.
The fire burned mostly rubbish and abandoned vehicles, Fire Services Chief Rylan Yatsushiro said Monday night.
Both the north- and southbound lanes were closed at Mile Post 13.5 as the brush fire approached the highway, the county said around 6:30 p.m.
Yatsushiro said the highway closed for 30 minutes.
Engine and ladder companies from Lahaina, an engine from Napili and tankers from Lahaina and Wailea responded to the fire.
