Event to spotlight endangered seabird

Night vision goggles, thermal imaging cameras and a radar-equipped van will be on hand at Haleakala National Park to help spot a species of endangered seabird as part of " 'Ua'u Night" from 6 to 9 p.m. on Friday.
The annual evening program, co-hosted by the park and the Maui Nui Seabird Recovery Project, aims to raise awareness for the Hawaiian petrel, which nests high on Haleakala, and to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Endangered Species Act.
Participants can discover the ecological and cultural significance of these seabirds and the dark night skies that are essential for their survival. Park staff and volunteers will answer questions and give short talks on 'ua'u.
The program will be held at the Haleakala Visitor Center at the 9,740-foot elevation level.
No reservations are required, but anyone entering the park must show or purchase a park pass at the entrance booth. Visitors should come prepared with warm layers and red-light (only) headlamps.
