Makawao Elementary School fifth grader Brooklyn Calvan, 11, and brother Jaxson Kresy, 10, hold the handmade sign she made for Saturday's bicycle safety equipment drive held at American Medical Response Maui County's main base in Kahului. Calvan and Kresy were riding their bikes on a gravel road near the school on March 13 when she was struck by a vehicle. She suffered numerous broken bones and contusions and spent a month recovering in a hospital on Oahu, where she also had to undergo skin grafts. Photos of the helmet she was wearing that day show gouges from the road caused when her head was dragged while pinned under the vehicle. "Wear a helmet," Calvan replied when asked what message she had for other bike riders. "It might save your life some day." Saturday's drive was held as part of Bicycle Safety Awareness Month. The Maui Bicycling League also had an informational table set up at the event. Donations were to be distributed to Maui County schools.
