Maui Breadfruit Company owner John Cadman teaches Lokelani Intermediate School sixth grader Zurich Marshall, 12, how to harvest ulu Friday afternoon at the school's garden. Cadman said ulu, or breadfruit, is a canoe crop that has played significant role in Hawaii's culture and history. "It is one of the most abundant food resources we have on this island," Cadman said. "And, unfortunately, it is underused." He said ulu is easy to grow and the fruit can be used in many different ways. On Friday, students from Lokelani's leadership class were serving ulu from the school's garden, both as baked and lightly salted chips and as a hummus dip.
