MFD holds memorial for fallen firefighter
The Maui News
First responders and Maui County officials gathered Friday morning to say a final farewell and honor the life and service of 24-year-old Maui-born firefighter Tre’ Evans-Dumaran, who died after responding to flooding in Kihei in January.
“We are extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to honor our fallen brother today,” Fire Chief Brad Ventura said. “He was a truly remarkable young man that will never be forgotten. Our firefighters are committed to protecting their community through good times and tough times, and we are currently in one of those tough times.
“We are not OK, but we will continue to get a little better every day,” Ventura added. “Our aloha goes out to Tre’s ohana as they are part of our Maui Fire ohana.”
Maui County Mayor Richard Bissen, members of the Maui Police Department, Kahului Airport Crash Rescue and other responders and fire personnel from around the state and the nation attended the ceremony at the Kahului Fire Station.
Evans-Dumaran was swept through a storm drain while responding to flooding in Kihei in late January. He was taken to the hospital and died days later.
His family has since set up a foundation to celebrate his life and to raise funds for scholarships and acts of kindness in the community.
The Live Like Tre’ Foundation will hold the first of three statewide events from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center in Pukalani.
