A 40-year-old Kaunakakai man died in an officer-involved shooting Sunday morning as police were responding to a report of a violation of a temporary restraining order, Maui Police said.
Two police officers on Molokai were responding to the call near mile marker 18.5 off Kamehameha V Highway in Wailua around 7:41 a.m. Sunday.
Preliminary investigation reveals that, upon arrival, the two officers encountered a man wielding a weapon, police said. The man advanced toward the officers, at which time one officer deployed his taser, which proved ineffective before both officers discharged their weapons, police said in a news release Sunday afternoon.
Officers performed life-saving measures until medic personnel arrived on the scene.
The 40-year-old man was transported to the Molokai General Hospital for further treatment, where he later succumbed to his injuries and died, police said.
The victim's identity is currently being withheld for 24 hours to allow his family an opportunity to notify their extended family and friends.
The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave as standard procedure.
There were no other injuries reported.
The investigation is ongoing, police said.
