Kihei Charter School senior Kayleigh Bass and Maui Waena Intermediate School 7th graders Adleina Doses and Kristine Tabada each took home the top prize of $1,000 for their anti-vaping public service announcement video, infographic and slogan in the third 'Imi Pono: The Greatest Challenge media contest.
The three students were honored at an awards ceremony on May 11 at Maui Economic Opportunity in Wailuku.
For this year's challenge, high school and middle school students were tasked with coming up with an anti-vaping campaign, including a slogan, a poster or brochure and a short public service announcement video. There were two divisions, high school and middle school, with cash prizes of $1,000 for first, $750 for second and $500 for third in each division. Each entrant also received a Zippy's gift card.
Bass used a "Survive the Vape Apocalypse" theme in her informational flyer and video parody of vaping and zombies. In their video, Doses and Tabada mixed up a deadly mix of ramen, which included chemicals found in vaping.
'Imi Pono means "to search for the right way." This year's 'Imi Pono contest was sponsored by MEO Youth Services, in partnership with the Maui Chamber of Commerce and Hawaii USA Federal Credit Union.
