A 20-year-old Haiku man sustained life-threatening injuries Monday morning after a stolen car he was driving rear-ended a truck and then collided head-on with a car near Mile Marker 6 on Hana Highway in Paia, police said.

The man who was driving the stolen white 2007 Chevrolet Cobalt was transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he remained Monday. The driver of the other car in the head-on collision, a 30-year-old Paia man, was transported to the hospital in stable condition, police said.

The incident occurred at approximately 5:01 a.m., when the Cobalt traveling eastbound on Hana Highway at a high rate of speed rear-ended a white 2014 Ford F-150 Maui County pickup truck, which was also traveling eastbound.

The Cobalt then went left of the center double-solid yellow line and collided head-on into a silver 2000 Toyota Corolla, which was traveling westbound on Hana Highway.

Both the Cobalt driver and the Corolla driver had to be extricated from their respective vehicles by first responders.

The driver of the F-150, a 31-year-old Lahaina man and his passenger, a 48-year-old Kahului man, sustained minor injuries and were transported to Maui Memorial Medical Center for further treatment.

The driver of the Cobalt was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The driver’s airbag deployed in the collision.

The driver of the Corolla was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. The front airbags also deployed in the collision.

The driver and passenger of the F-150 were wearing seat belts and no airbags were deployed in the collision.

Speed is believed to be a factor in the crash.

The involvement of drugs or alcohol has yet to be determined as the investigation remains ongoing, police said.
