From big-wave surfers to innovators seeking to solve the planet's problems, the Maui Film Festival will feature several films in person at the MACC from Wednesday to Sunday.
WEDNESDAY
• "Big Wave Guardians," 5:30 p.m. The film spotlight's the rise of Hawaii's lifeguards and the massive swells and life-and-death rescues they face.
• "Humanity Stoked," 7:45 p.m. World-famous skateboarders, scientists, artists, musicians, activists and educators reveal their experiences and insight on being human.
THURSDAY
• "Common Ground," 5:30 p.m. In acknowledging how racism has forged today's farming industry, regenerative farmers return to pre-colonial practices pioneered by Indigenous and Black farmers to restore the soil.
• "The Engine Inside," 8 p.m. The trials of six everyday people from vastly different worlds reveal the unique power of the bicycle to change lives and help build a better world.
FRIDAY
• "Immediate Family," 5:30 p.m. The film follows the musicians who changed the course of musical history, creating the sound of the 1970s and all that came after.
• "Jules," 8 p.m. Milton's quiet life in western Pennsylvania is upended when a UFO and an extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard.
SATURDAY
• "Blueback," 5:30 p.m. Abby takes on poachers to save the enormous blue grouper she's befriended and the beautiful bay they live on.
• "The Road to Patagonia," 8:20 p.m. The lives of two strangers are changed forever when they cross paths on the surfing adventure of a lifetime.
The evening will also include award presentations for actors Annie Gonzalez and Yara Shahidi.
SUNDAY
• "Sweet Adventure," 5:30 p.m. The film centers on travel, friendship and great waves, all set in El Salvador.
• "Savage Waters," 6:50 p.m. A 19th century treasure-hunter's journal inspires a mission to surf a mythical, never-ridden wave in the remote and dangerous waters of the Atlantic.
• "Tiki Taane in Session with CSO," 8:45 p.m. The award-winning musician puts on an emotional and explosive performance with the 50-piece Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
The Virtual Cinema will also launch with more films from July 3-30.
