Maui County's non-seasonally unemployment rate was at 2.5 percent in May, which is down from a year ago when it was at 3.1 percent, according to recently released statistics from the state Department of Business, Economic Development & Tourism.
It was also a slight decline compared to the 2.8 percent unemployment rate in April.
Maui island's unemployment rate was at 2.5 percent last month, down from 3.1 percent a year ago, while Molokai's unemployment rate was at 4.2 percent, down from 8.2 percent compared to May 2022, and Lanai had an unemployment rate of 1.5 percent, which is down compared to 3.1 percent a year ago.
Honolulu City & County's unemployment rate was at 2.6 percent in May, while Hawaii County's rate was 3 percent and Kauai County had an unemployment rate of 2.5 percent.
The rates were not seasonally adjusted, meaning that they did not take into account seasonal hiring and layoff patterns. A seasonally adjusted breakdown was not available for each county.
The state's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in May was 3.1 percent, compared to the overall U.S. unemployment rate of 3.7 percent.
In May, 657,450 people were employed and 21,400 were unemployed, for a total seasonally adjusted labor force of 678,800 statewide.
This is up from May 2022, when 653,900 people were employed and 22,750 were unemployed. The total labor force was 676,600.
