Maui-focused film wins festival award

1 min read

A film that follows the story of two Lahainaluna high school boys from separate worlds won the Audience Award (Narrative) at the Los Angeles Asian Pacific Film Festival last month and is set to screen at two more festivals in June.

Described as Hawaii's first boys' love drama, "My Partner" is directed by Native Hawaiian visual storyteller Keli'i Grace and written by Maui per diem judge and longtime attorney Lance Collins. The film focuses on the lives of Edmar, a high achieving Filipino student, and Pili, a Native Hawaiian student athlete stand-out, who come from rival friends groups that clash when Edmar's group is caught overfishing a native species in a restored stream by Pili's group. When Edmar and Pili are assigned to work on a class project together, they protest but eventually come to understand each other's backgrounds and cultures.

"My Partner" has been selected for the KASHISH Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and will screen on Friday at the Liberty Cinema in Mumbai, India.

The film will also be featured at the BJX Bajio International Film Festival on June 14 in Guanajuato, Mexico.
