UH-Maui vice chancellor, former Maui Land & Pine CEO appointed to education board

Kahele Dukelow, the vice chancellor of academic affairs at UH-Maui College, and Warren Haruki, former CEO of Maui Land & Pineapple Co., have been appointed by Gov. Josh Green to serve on the state Board of Education.

Haruki will succeed At-Large BOE Member Lynn Fallin and has been tapped to chair the board in place of Bruce Voss, who will continue to serve as an at-large member, according to a news release from the Governor’s Office. Dukelow will succeed Maui County Member Kili Namau’u. The new members’ terms start July 1.

The governor also appointed Shanty Asher, a current BOE member and the Pacific Islander liaison officer at the Economic Revitalization for the City and County of Honolulu. The three appointments were announced on Friday.

Earlier this year, Haruki stepped down as chairman and CEO of Maui Land & Pineapple Co., which he led for 14 years, and took on a senior adviser role. He also served as trustee and chairperson of the Parker Ranch Foundation Trust from 2004 to 2012 and was a founding member of the Public Schools of Hawaii Foundation. A graduate of Kapaa High School, Haruki holds a Bachelor of Science in industrial management from Purdue University and a Master of Business Administration in marketing from UH-Manoa.

Dukelow previously taught in the state Department of Education as an elementary and middle school teacher. She was formerly a faculty member with the Hawaiian Studies department at UH-Maui and was also previously the dean of arts and sciences, according to the college. Dukelow is the current chairperson of ‘Aha Kauleo, a statewide group that advises the DOE Office of Hawaiian Education on Hawaiian language immersion. In 2019, she was recognized by the Native Hawaiian Education Council as Hawaiian educator of the year. She is a graduate of Baldwin High School, Maui Community College and UH-Manoa, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in Hawaiian studies and master’s degree in education in teaching.

Asher previously served as a consultant at the Pacific Resources for Education and Learning in Hawaii and served as a deputy assistant secretary for Pacific affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs for the Federated States of Micronesia. Asher is an alumna of the Executive Leadership Development Program and Asia Pacific Security Studies. She also earned both her Bachelor of Science in pre-law and a Master of Science in criminal justice administration at Chaminade University of Honolulu, then earned her Juris Doctor from the Thomas Jefferson School of Law in San Diego in 2018. She is a graduate of Kosrae High School.
