Tropical Storm Calvin strengthened into a Category 2 hurricane on Thursday, with maximum sustained winds of 100 mph and higher gusts, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The hurricane was located about 960 miles southwest of the southern tip of Baja California in the Eastern Pacific Ocean and was moving west at 15 mph as of 5 p.m. Thursday.
Calvin is expected to strengthen over the coming days but gradually weaken by the weekend as it moves over cooler water, the hurricane center said. While on a trajectory straight for the Hawaiian islands, Calvin is predicted to become a tropical storm again before reaching the islands.
