Land trust receives over $800K in grants

Hawai'i Land Trust has been awarded an $803,700 grant under the U.S. Department of Commerce's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Climate-Ready Coasts initiative.
The funds will be used to restore taro fields and a Hawaiian fishpond at the land trust's 277-acre Waihee Coastal Dunes and Wetlands Refuge. Hawai'i Land Trust will work with the community to restore the flow of water to the taro fields and fishpond by building a ridge-to-reef model for collaborative land and ocean stewardship. As part of this process, there will be outreach meetings, workshops, volunteer workdays and educational activities.
The land trust also recently received a $10,000 grant from Nareit Hawaii to support the nonprofit's aina-based education program, which was formalized in 2019 and has expanded to four preserves on three islands, with plans to increase to six preserves on four islands in 2024. The program includes field trips, school visits, educational videos and internships.
As a statewide nonprofit, the land trust has preserved more than 21,900 acres across the islands for more than a decade through land purchases and conservation easements, protecting coastlines, cultural landscapes and lands that grow food.
