The Maui Fire Department Ocean Safety Bureau's Junior Lifeguard sessions for 2023 wrapped up with the Maui Junior Lifeguard Challenge on Friday at Kamaole Beach Park I.
Participants ages 13-17 from all Ocean Safety districts on Maui -- North, South and West -- competed in a 200-meter swim; a 100 x 100 x 100 run, swim and run; a paddleboard relay; and beach flags. Results were as follows:
GIRLS
200M swim (ages 13-14): 1. Talia Sloan, 2. Lila Sloan, 3. Ciela Kaahui.
200M swim (15-17): 1. Bella Kuailani, 2. Sarah Choo.
Run-swim-run (all ages): 1. Talia Sloan, 2. Lila Sloan.
Beach flags (all ages): 1. Piimauna Kekiwi, 2. Bella Kuailani.
BOYS
200M swim (13-14): 1. Eli Hazlet, 2. Kaina Yamada, 3. Levi Stoddart.

The Junior Lifeguard Program has provided training to more than 200 island keiki in 2023, according to the department. Sessions were held on Molokai, Lanai and in Hana, in addition to the South, West and North Shore Ocean Safety districts, according to a MFD news release Sunday.
The program is open to youth ages 8-17 and teaches them everyday life-saving skills, team building, relationships and leadership while becoming both mentally and physically fit.
