Car crash in Makawao topples tree, power lines

Two people were taken to the hospital in stable condition after their car crashed into a tree, which fell on power lines and started a small fire along Makawao Avenue Tuesday afternoon.
At about 3:56 p.m., Central Dispatch received a report of a single-car crash in the area of 444 Makawao Ave., according to Maui Police Department spokesperson Alana Pico. The car was traveling towards Makawao town when it crashed into a tree, which fell onto power lines and completely blocked the roadway, Pico said.
The live wires ignited a small fire in nearby brush. The Maui Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after and extinguished the fire.
The driver and single occupant of the vehicle were taken in stable condition to the Maui Memorial Medical Center emergency room for further treatment, Pico said.
Makawao Avenue was closed between Apana Road and Laie Drive, according to a county notification.
Hawaiian Electric said at 5 p.m. that its crews were working to restore power to about 6,000 customers in parts of Upcountry and East Maui, including Haiku, after the tree fell on power lines.
Maui County Public Works Department crews arrived on the scene at about 5:42 p.m. to remove the tree, Pico said.
The road was still closed as of 7 p.m.
