Lt. Gov. Sylvia Luke will remain in state and continue her role as acting governor to be available to respond to the impacts of Hurricane Dora, the Governor's Office said Tuesday.
Gov. Josh Green has been traveling out of state since July 30 and will return Aug. 15. Luke has been serving as acting governor and had planned to travel out of state this week, with other members of Green's cabinet planning to step in as acting governor during her trip.
However, Luke will now stay on until Green returns. On Tuesday, Luke issued an emergency proclamation related to wildfires in Maui and Hawaii counties that she said was "caused by the strong winds of Hurricane Dora" passing south of the state. The Category 4 storm with maximum winds of 130 mph was about 700 miles southwest of Honolulu as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.
The emergency proclamation authorizes the activation of the Hawaii National Guard, actions by local emergency officials and the spending of state general revenue funds for relief efforts.
