Obon celebration takes on added significance

Dancers circle the yagura at Kula Shofukuji Shingon Mission’s obon festival Saturday evening in Kula. Church Association President Jeff Komoda said the annual celebration for the dead took on added significance in the wake of the devastation suffered in Lahaina, including the destruction of sister church, Lahaina Shingon Mission. “The service tonight was about the members of the church that was lost and what they are going through and what we can do to help in the recovery,” Komoda said. Folks in attendance Saturday, including some who fought to save their nearby Kula homes from wind-driven wildfires this month, said it felt good to share in community, and to have a bit of normalcy in a world that seems turned upside down by Maui’s tragic blazes.
