The upper tennis court at the War Memorial Complex will be closed intermittently so it can undergo more than $1,000 in repairs due to vandalism, Maui County said Thursday.
The tennis court was painted with pickleball lines, and a bracket was installed into a wood panel of the tennis fence to put up shade, according to the county, which discovered the damages July 28.
The court was closed this week, but will open temporarily today. After the county secures a contractor, the upper court must be closed again for about a week to repaint the surface so high school tennis competitions may resume.
The painted reconfiguration prevents sanctioned tennis tournaments from taking place, including high school athletic league competitions, since tournaments on tennis courts require compliance with specific markings and unaltered court floors, the county said.
Criminal property damage to the court is estimated at $1,350.
The county Department of Parks and Recreation asks that any vandalism to county-owned parks and recreation facilities be reported to the Maui Police Department.
