Seminar to discuss fire impacts on reef

1 min read

The Maui Nui Marine Resource Council will host a free presentation on the potential impacts of the Aug. 8 wildfires on leeward reefs, starting at 6 p.m. today at the Maui Ocean Center's Dome Theater.

The in-person and online presentation will discuss the effort to rapidly map the current, baseline conditions of coral reefs along leeward Maui where the runoff is expected after the fires stripped the land of cover and soils and left behind toxins that could wash downstream.

The presentation will include Brett Kettle of Flying Fish Technologies, whose team has been mapping Maui's reefs over the past week and who has pioneered coral reef protection for over three decades.
