The Pulauhala program, an accelerator initiative on Molokai led by Ho'aka Mana Native Hawaiian Organization recently graduated its first 12 entrepreneurs from the program on Oct. 25.
The participants, which ranged from established companies to individuals with innovative ideas, completed 14 workshops during their year-long journey. Pulauhala offered a comprehensive curriculum focused on developing business concepts, brands, and logistics, according to a news release. In addition, participants took tangible steps such as registering their business names with the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, while also gaining insight into tax obligations and filing procedures.
An essential aspect of the Pulauhala program was fostering a strong sense of self and authenticity, said Kanoelani Davis, executive director of Ho'aka Mana and CEO of PoMahina Designs. Davis highlighted the importance of personal inspiration and inner motivation in achieving success in business. The participants participated in off-island events such as the Merrie Monarch and the Made in Maui County Festival.
As part of their graduation, the entrepreneurs showcased their progress through a three-minute "elevator pitch" competition. The winning participant was Sharlah Gloor with her company Spencer Baby.
Beyond conceptual development, the Pulauhala program fostered a sense of community among local entrepreneurs. By connecting with one another, participants shared support, inspiration, and valuable insights, the news release said. Davis, reflecting on her own entrepreneurial journey, expressed her hope that Pulauhala would enable a new generation of entrepreneurs to succeed collectively, rather than competing against each other.
Running small businesses on Molokai poses unique challenges but also offers distinct advantages, Davis said. Creativity emerges as a vital trait for entrepreneurs, fueled by the scarce resources on the island, the news release said.
Ho'aka Mana has announced that the 2024 Pulauhala cohort will commence in January. There will be a meet and greet event in December. Interested Molokai residents can find more information on Ho'aka Mana's Instagram (@hoakamana) or by visiting their website at hoaka-mana.org.
