Waterline work will prompt a single-lane closure on Honoapiilani Highway in the southbound direction at the intersection with Akahele Street this week, the state Department of Transportation announced.

The road closure in Kapalua will run from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. starting today through Saturday, including Thanksgiving. The lane will be shifted to maintain one lane in each direction. Akahele Street will be closed in the southbound direction and there will be no left turn from northbound Honoapiilani Highway onto Akahele Street during work hours. Drivers seeking to access Lower Honoapiilani Road will be detoured from Honoapiilani Highway onto Hoohui Road.

During the closure, crews will be installing waterlines across Honoapiilani Highway. The work is part of the state’s efforts to build a temporary campus for King Kamehameha III Elementary students whose school was destroyed in the Aug. 8 wildfire.

Drivers are advised to expect delays and proceed with caution through the work area, the DOT said in a news release Saturday. Electronic message boards will be in place to notify drivers of closure information.

An additional week of waterline work may be necessary for this part of the project, with the schedule to be announced as soon as possible, the DOT said. All roadwork is weather permitting.
