With the Maui County Kalana O Maui building bathed in green light as part of a memorial service in honor of Hannah Brown Wednesday evening, her brother Sketch Brown (left) and his wife Kalena Brown disassemble a poster with Hannah’s likeness before heading to Kuihelani Highway to take part in a DUI checkpoint with Maui police officers. Hannah Brown was killed on the highway on June 23, 2019 in a crash caused by a drunken and speeding driver. “I’m very grateful for all the people who showed up for this event,” Sketch Brown said. “Hopefully it continues to make an impact on our community.” Mom Charlene Brown carried Hannah’s ashes in a backpack during the event. “Don’t drink and drive,” she said. “Find a sober driver to take you home. Remember Hannah Brown when you drink.”

The Hannah Brown Memorial Impaired Driving Awareness Rally is now in its fifth year and is held around Thanksgiving time.

Both Brown and Fukushima were teenagers when they were killed in traffic accidents caused by drunk drivers, Fukushima in July of 2009 and Brown in June of 2019.

Organizers said thanks to the generosity of donors, about $10,000 worth of gift certificates, gym memberships and merchandise was handed out to drivers who passed inspection at the checkpoint.
