Financial assistance available for internet service
Internet discounts are available for Hawaii households through a federal benefit program, according to the state Department of Business and Economic Development’s Hawaii Broadband & Digital Equity Office.
The Federal Communications Commission’s Affordable Connectivity Program can offer up to $30 a month toward broadband service from a participating provider and up to $75 toward broadband service for households on Hawaiian homelands.
Officials with the equity office have been to Maui to educate displaced Lahaina wildfire survivors about the program.
To qualify, a household must have at least one member who:
• Qualifies for Medicaid/Med-QUEST.
• Qualifies for the Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP) or the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).
• Qualifies for supplemental security income.
• Qualifies for federal public housing assistance, veterans and survivors pension benefit or lifeline program.
• Received benefits under the free and reduced-price school breakfast or lunch program.
• Received a federal Pell Grant in the current year.
