Paia mission to host New Year's service
The Rinzai Zen Mission in Paia will host a New Year's Eve service and Joya no Kane traditional bell-ringing ceremony beginning at 11 p.m. on Dec. 31.
Following the bell ringing, the mission will serve refreshments and Toshikoshi soba, also known as New Year's Eve noodles.
Rinzai Zen Mission is located at 120 Alawai Rd. inside Baldwin Beach Park. The park gate will open at 10:15 p.m. and close at 1:30 a.m.

Kanaka'ole, Roback to perform Dec. 28
Maui musicians Wilson Kanaka'ole and Jarret Roback will perform a free outdoor concert at 6 p.m. on Dec. 28, at Hale Ho'ike'ike at the Bailey House Museum in Wailuku.
The concert is part of Lahaina Restoration Foundation's Hawaiian Music Series, which has been a tradition for 15 years in Lahaina, with performances held on the last Thursday of every month.
Attendees are asked to bring blankets, mats or low-back beach chairs. Free parking is available.

Volunteers needed for nonprofit bookstore
The Maui Friends of the Library is looking for volunteers to help open and run the nonprofit's new bookstore in Kihei.
The bookstore will sell gently used books for all ages and interests. Volunteers are needed to help stock shelves and ring up customers. Volunteers are asked to work a four-hour shift once a week.
Those interested in volunteering can stop by the Kihei store between 10 a.m. and 1 p.m., Monday through Friday. The bookstore is located at 95 East Lipoa St. in the South Maui Center near Fabiani's Italian Restaurant and Bakery.

Maui student earns national scholarship
The Institute for Educational Advancement has selected Makawao 7th grader Elizabeth Kayes as a recipient of the Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship for the Class of 2028.
Kayes is one of 27 students across the country to receive one of the national, merit-based scholarships for gifted 7th graders, according to a news release.
The scholarship award includes a fully funded, four-year high school tuition scholarship. Kayes will receive upwards of $200,000 to attend the high school or individualized education program of her choice.
Applicants for the Caroline D. Bradley Scholarship are required to complete a rigorous portfolio application process, which includes essays, academic transcripts, letters of recommendation and a work sample. Eligible applicants must also achieve scores at the highest level on nationally normed standardized tests.
The application for the next class of Caroline D. Bradley Scholars will be available in the fall.

Annual art show set for Jan. 28
Lahaina Galleries will host the 22nd annual Art of Aloha art show from noon to 3 p.m. on Jan. 28, at its location at the Shops at Wailea.
Attending artists include Alex Bernstein, Pete Cabrina, Carrie Graber, Robert Lyn Nelson, Ronaldo Macedo, Steve Turnbull, Donna Young and Caroline Zimmermann.
The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.

Hawaii State FCU offering scholarships
The Hawaii State Federal Credit Union is accepting applications for its 2024 student scholarship program through Feb. 29.
The credit union will award $5,000 scholarships each to 20 students. The scholarship program is open to all Hawaii State Federal Credit members and their dependents. Applicants must be planning to attend a fully accredited university, college or trade/vocational school as a full-time undergraduate or graduate student. They must also demonstrate financial need and have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average.
"The purpose of Hawaii State FCU's scholarship program is to provide financial support to deserving Hawaii students pursuing their higher education goals," said Andrew Rosen, president and CEO of Hawaii State Federal Credit Union. "For more than 25 years, we've remained committed to investing in the next generation of leaders and innovators, and we look forward to awarding the next cohort of students."

Maui student among art contest winners
Maui fourth-grader Gabrielle Gamiao is one of the winners of the Hawaii Realtors' 2023 annual Keiki Art Contest, which is designed to help children learn about fair housing.
With the theme "Building Aloha: Spreading Fair Housing Across Hawaii," the contest celebrates the Fair Housing Act, which became law in April 1968.
The annual art contest is open to students across the state in two categories: grades K-4 and 5-8. Gamiao's artwork, titled "Together, We Will Arise," earned third place in the K-4 category.
Prizes in each category include $250 for first place, $150 for second place and $75 for third place.
