Unexploded ordnance forces road closures, evacuations

2 min read

Some classes were relocated to another portion of the Lihikai School campus and lunch and recess were held indoors at the school as police handled a report of an old unexploded ordnance at a nearby residence in Kahului, school and police officials said Friday afternoon.

Around 10:20 a.m. Friday, a resident on Kunu Place, which is northwest of the campus, called police to turn in an old unexploded ordnance that was found in the residence's garage, police said.

As a precaution, surrounding roads were closed and nearby homes and classrooms at Lihikai were evacuated, police said.

The MPD Special Response Team Bomb Squad responded and safely disarmed and removed the ordnance without incident.

The ordnance will be turned over to the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal to be disposed of, police said. The roads and school were reopened at 11:19 a.m., police said.

According to a letter from Lihikai to parents and guardians, the school relocated everyone in classrooms closest to Kunu Place to a safer part of campus as police conducted their investigation.

Lunch and recess were held indoors to minimize movement on campus, said Principal Barbara Oura Tavares.

The school also sent a message via School Messenger advising parents of the situation and that students were in a safe location. Another message was sent through the same platform when the situation was resolved.

The school was given an all clear at 11:25 a.m., the school said.
