A touch of stormy weather

FIRST PHOTO: The 85-foot decommissioned U.S. Navy torpedo retriever Chaparral rests against the breakwall fronting the Kihei Beach Condominiums in North Kihei Tuesday afternoon. The privately owned boat was reportedly one of at least three vessels to run aground in high winds and stormy conditions caused by the Kona Low that swept over Maui Monday night through Tuesday. The Chaparral had been moored offshore. It also drifted to the reef near Ko'ie'ie Fishpond on Sept. 9 after breaking its mooring lines. The storm forced the cancelation of classes for many students across the island. All four Maui Interscholastic League basketball games were cancelled.

SECOND PHOTO: Hui O Ka Wai Ola Coastal Water Quality Monitoring Crew member Tova Callender takes a photo Tuesday morning of the flooded South Kihei Road culvert bridge at Waiakoa Gulch near Kihei Canoe Club. The low-slung bridge was closed for much of the day Tuesday after being partially clogged by debris.
