Lunas advance to the Hawaii State Science Olympiad tournament finals competition

The Lahainaluna Science Olympiad team will advance to the Hawaii State Science Olympiad tournament finals after winning the Medalist Category during the recently concluded Maui Regional Science Olympiad tournament. The event will be held on April 6, 2024, at the University of Hawaii, Manoa campus. The team brought three gold medals in the Chem Lab, Microbe Mission, Anatomy, and Physiology events, together with two silver medals and seven bronze medals.
"I first joined the Lahainaluna Science Olympiad team during my sophomore year in hopes of expanding my knowledge in the sciences," said Emily Hegrenes, who competed in the Chem Lab event and graduating this year. "As someone who is looking to pursue a career in the STEM field, this experience has been invaluable, and the bond between our team is something I'll cherish when I look back on my experience," she added.
"As a newbie in the tournament, I felt anxious and intimidated, but as we progressed throughout the day, I eased into it and got less worrisome and had more fun," said Zabree Neizman, who participated in the Forestry event.
The other team members are Carmela Mei Bonifacio, M.Jee Abarra, Carla Agrade, Sofia Nebrida, Samantha Monnett, Zabree Neizman, Judy Dela Cruz, Owen Hegrenes, Kamden Hart, Giselle Ganoot and Giana Bayudan.
"I am so happy for our students, knowing that they are dedicated and passionate about what they do to enhance their knowledge outside of the four walls of the classroom," said math teacher CJ Ancheta, one of the team's coaches.
