War Memorial Gym gets major facelift

The Maui News / MATTHEW THAYER photos

With all of its windows, bleachers, lights and flooring removed, War Memorial Gym in Wailuku is a shell of its former self as Bowers + Kubota Consulting project inspector Justin Rodrigues walks inside the building Wednesday morning. The venerable county facility is undergoing a major facelift scheduled to be completed early next year. The gym is to be upgraded into a category-five-rated hurricane shelter. Along with updating the athletic facility with a new court, bleachers, lighting and sound system, improvements include extending the bathrooms by 11 feet, enclosing the front of the building and replacing the mens and womens locker rooms. Blazy Construction Inc. is the general contractor. War Memorial Complex was built in the 1950s and is dedicated to the memory of Maui residents who gave their lives in military service.

Starting at $4.62/week.
