Lahaina memorial

FIRST PHOTO: The soulful eyes of Michael Mahnensmith stare out from one of the photos attached to the memorial to Lahaina fire victims lining Lahaina Bypass Road Tuesday morning. The photos put faces to the names for most of the 101 people confirmed killed by the windblown wildfire on Aug. 8 of last year. Much like the Vietnam Veterans Memorial replica Wall That Heals, which recently paid a visit to Maui, Lahaina's memorial is a stirring reminder of who and what was lost. It also provides a way to connect and pay tribute. Parking is off the side of Lahainaluna Road, above the bypass. Mahnensmith was born June 14, 1943 and died Aug. 8, 2023.
