Banyan tree’s signs of recovery
The 150-year-old Lahaina banyan tree continues to show signs of recovery Wednesday, eight months after the Maui fires. DLNR crews monitored the progress and state of the “stress level” the tree is in eight months after the fires. The DLNR estimated that nearly 40 percent of the tree has been cut down as part of the effort to bring the tree back to pre-fire health. The DLNR is hopeful to install an irrigation system by next week to help in watering the canopy, aerial roots, and terrestrial roots to help prevent further decline. The DLNR stated they are doing their best to keep the tree alive and said it is not an easy thing considering everything around it is breaking down and that there has been lots of borer beetles that have moved in, which they have treated the tree for. The DLNR added they are trying to keep what is intact to stay intact. A video of the DLNR update on the Lahaina Banyon can be seen at: https://vimeo.com/933015102?share=copy.
