The Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) announced Friday that it has awarded International Life Support, Inc., doing business as American Medical Response (AMR), a four and a half year contract worth $74,612,636 to provide ambulance services for all of Maui County.

That equates to $18,653,159.30 per year, according to the request for proposal, which was put out on April 12.

The DOH announced that AMR has also been awarded the contract for ambulance services on the island of Kaui for the same length of time for $38,011,404.00, according to the award.

According to the DOH, the awards are the result of required competitive procurements. The DOH published two requests for proposals (RFPs) on April 12, seeking vendors to provide Comprehensive 911 Ground Ambulance Emergency Medical Services (EMS) for Kauaʻi and Maui Counties beginning January 1, 2025.

“The current contracts are being extended until then to ensure that Maui and Kaua’i residents have uninterrupted access to ground ambulance services,” the DOH said of the current contract with AMR.

The DOH stated the new contracts will ensure that every district has an ambulance staffed with a paramedic and a second responder who is at least an EMT, which are the current qualifications for, and level of staffing, provide a second ambulance for Moloka’i, and add requirements for a quality assurance coordinator and a pediatric emergency care coordinator, among other improvements in quality and performance.
