Maui students march for climate action

KAHULUI–On May 22, as the world celebrated International Biodiversity Day, the County worked in collaboration with ‘Iao Intermediate School, held an empowering event aimed at fostering climate justice education and youth engagement in public policy, according to the county.
Over 150 students from ‘Iao Intermediate School marched to the Kalana O Maui Building as part of the ‘Wednesday For Our World Walk,’ symbolizing the students’ commitment to global leadership and advocacy. Upon reaching Kalana O Maui, the students actively participated in the Youth Summit, focusing on the Voluntary Local Review and Locally Determined Contribution based on the UN Sustainable Development Goals Projects, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to promote sustainability, resilience, and human rights among Maui’s youth.
During the Youth Summit, 18 presentations were delivered by various student groups in the County Council Chambers, addressing crucial topics such as poverty eradication, food security, health, education, gender equality, clean water, renewable energy, economic growth, infrastructure, innovation, sustainable communities, climate action, biodiversity conservation, peace, justice, and partnership.
These presentations, collectively known as “Student Voices for Sustainable Development,” underscored the students’ dedication to effecting positive change in Maui Nui. Furthermore, the inclusion of youth perspectives in the Priority Climate Action Resilience & Implementation Plan demonstrates a significant step towards integrating their voices into public policy decisions.
Joshua Cooper, Chief Sustainability Officer for the OIS, expressed admiration for the students’ commitment, stating, “We are deeply moved by the dedication of our youth in championing sustainability. Their voices, showcased through discussions on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, illuminate the path towards a more equitable and resilient future for Maui Nui. Let us stand alongside these inspiring young leaders as they drive meaningful change, shaping a world where every voice matters.”
Looking ahead, a follow-up climate action event is planned, involving the planting of native plants at Kalana O Maui next month. This initiative will contribute to the ongoing endemic ecology project, furthering the efforts towards environmental conservation and sustainability on the island.
The insights gathered from the event will be shared prior to the UN Summit of the Future in September at the UN General Assembly, ensuring that Maui’s youth perspectives continue to inform global discussions on sustainable development.
