Maui husband and wife team to premiere new songs at their “Burn the page” show

Performing together for around 13 years, the husband and wife team of Tempa Singer-Nave and Naor Nave are getting ready to launch their latest "Burn the Page" production in their popular Medicine Music series.

Accompanied by a four-piece band, this accomplished Maui duo will showcase their original music and share stories that inspired the songs at the ProArts Playhouse on July 5. "We're pouring our hearts into this and can't wait to share it," Tempa posted on Facebook. "Each song is a piece of our soul, a glimpse into the heart's deepest corners."

"Burn the Page" refers to their inspiring new single, which will be released on July 2, and will be available as a free download to all who attend the show.

"I wrote the lyrics to 'Burn The Page,' and Naor wrote the beautiful music that inspired it," Tempa explains. "I hope it will be an anthem for self-love and a message to be kind to yourself. I wrote it for myself, and for my daughter too. My daughter's been sober, and she almost died last year. I wanted to let her know that it's never too late to burn the page and start over and be kind to yourself. That's the way we get to heal. Last year, when she almost died, she was in a diabetic coma. I spent a month in Colorado and it was quite scary. I was so grateful for her to be alive that I wanted to let her know how special she was. Also, I think we all need that reminder."

For the ProArts show, they will be backed by Kanekoa co-founder Travis Rice on percussion, keyboardist David Fraser, guitarist Michael Ferenci, and veteran bassist Jay Molina, who will perform at the Ukulele Festival of Great Britain with his son Andrew Molina, in late July. "We're so grateful that they are supporting us on this and doing our original music with us," says Tempa.

The couple are currently working on a new album that will likely be out by the end of the year. "We are in the process of recording the songs," Naor says. "We're going to have three single releases before the album."

Back in 2018, they released "Ember's Fire," a compelling, all original work, touching on themes of transformation, love, loss, and release, in a style they called "medicinal musical mojo." It was recently remastered and re-released with "a brighter, fuller sound," says Tempa.

Their new project "represents an evolution, it's a little more upbeat," says Naor. "We have ballads, but we are crossing genres, and not being pigeonholed into staying in one lane," adds Tempa. "It will have a little bit of funk and soul and bluegrassy stuff."

With years of professional experience, soulful singer Tempa shared the stage with B.B. King, Mavis Staples, Koko Taylor, and Jeff Beck, when she fronted a blues band in Colorado. Growing up on an Israeli kibbutz, Naor has played music most of his life and even made it to the final of Israel's version of "American Idol."

Besides performing as a duo, they fronted the popular Soul Kitchen gumbo band and launched the occasional Tempa and the Tantrums gigs, which they describe as swamp grooves inspired by soul, blues, rock, jam, and country.

Whatever they create, there's an important element of empowerment and inspiration. "We have always used the term music is medicine," says Tempa. "We truly feel like music heals and has the ability and the power to heal, inspire, and change your life. Without it, I don't know where we'd be."

Tempa and Naor present their "Burn the Page" show on July 5 at 7:30 p.m. the ProArts Playhouse. Tickets are $25 and $35. On June 30 and July 28, they perform as a duo at Ocean Organic Farm and Distillery, as part of the ongoing Maui Jazz & Blues Festival.
